What animals are endangered? Many, says Rewilding Europe26 September 2013
Many animals remain endangered in Europe - in spite of some successes - says a Rewilding Europe report released today.
The European bison and white-tailed eagle have both made dramatic returns. The formerly-extinct bison has now reached a population of almost 3000, while eagle breeding pairs have more than tripled in the last 40 years.
The report - by the Zoological Society of London (ZSL), BirdLife International, European Bird Census Council (EBCC) and experts from across Europe - details the recovery of 37 mammal and bird species across Europe over the past 50 years.
It also provides a resource for future conservation projects across the continent.
This study helps us understand the interventions and conditions necessary for a broad range of species to experience similar recoveries.

Reintroduce wolves
Friends of the Earth interviewed George Monbiot about his new book Feral earlier this year. The book encourages the rewilding of abandoned sites in the UK - the reintroduction of formerly extinct plant and animal species such as wolves and lynxes. Read the interview.
