I'm taking a week's break from obsessing over my bike. I started getting worried when I realised I was furtively planning how to visit a fourth bike shop in a week. Not to buy, you understand, just to browse.

In any case it's time to start raising money. After all, that's the main point of cycling 500 miles from London to Edinburgh with the Big Green Bike Ride next May.

Luckily the guide you get when you register for the ride is full of ideas and quick-start tips.

Half an hour's mouse work and I was up and running with a page on JustGiving.com.

Now revenge will be mine. All you mums and dads at the school gates who've cornered me to subsidise your baking habits. All you old chums I somehow lost contact with. Family, friends and loved ones, I'm coming for you. I've got a birthday soon, Christmas is racing towards us and, come to think of it, Easter falls before the bike ride. Stop before you even think of buying me stuff that I'll have to re-sell on eBay. Just show me the money.
