FAQs

How do I set up JustGiving?
4 May 2011

Setting up your JustGiving page is easy. When you do it, you'll be asked a couple of questions and we want to make sure that you answer them correctly. This way, we make sure that we collect Gift Aid at the right time.

Cost of the event

In the registration pack you will have seen that the minimum sponsorship and costs of the event per person are as follows:

* The above costs don't include your registration fee or Gift Aid.

These costs cover pretty much everything you'll need, except personal items. Here's what you get for taking part:

  • Regionally sourced organic food. Lunch and dinner for all riders plus breakfast for overnighters.
  • Accommodation (six-day riders only). Five nights in a tent and the final night in a hotel in Edinburgh. Accommodation is based on two people sharing. Single person supplements are available on request.
  • Support vehicles. Medics, marshals, support vehicles and mechanics will be on hand.
  • Rest stops offering drinks and snacks.
  • Help with planning. Pre-event get together, kit list and dedicated fundraising support.
  • Discounts on professional nutritional advice and training support.
  • Full route map and GPS downloads.
  • Overnight bike storage.
  • Daily baggage transfers.
  • Discounts on cycling accessories and bike insurance.
  • Free cycling jersey for six-day riders and t-shirts for day riders.

Gift Aid

As some of your sponsorship money will be used to cover the cost of your trip (detailed above), you need to state this when you set up your JustGiving page.

This is easily done: when you go to the Big Green Bike Ride fundraising page on JustGiving you will be asked whether the charity is contributing to the costs of the event: here you need to select yes. That's it!

When sponsoring you, all your donors will be asked if they are a direct relative of you. When this is selected the donation is no longer eligible for Gift Aid.

This is because HMRC puts restrictions on reclaiming Gift Aid on donations for some types of events where the charity contributes to some, or all, of the cost of the trip.

Even as a UK taxpayer, you cannot reclaim Gift Aid on your donation if you are:

  • married to the page owner or any team member
  • a relative (brother, sister) ancestor (e.g. mother) or lineal descendant (e.g. grandson) of the page owner
  • married to a relative of the page owner
  • donating on behalf of a company
  • the fundraiser that is doing the event

You can now set up your JustGiving page by clicking here.

Thank you and good luck!
