Get Gobby
27 June 2013

Get Gobby was a competition challenging university students to tell us how they'd convince people to protect the environment by changing their diets.

We teamed up with People & Planet and were supported by the NUS and Part Time Carnivore.

We are delighted to announce the three winning individuals/groups are:

  • Jannat Hossain & Aaron Parr of Queen Mary, University of London (overall winners)
  • Natalia Collins & Luke Holmes of Essex University
  • Aaron Faunch of the University of Lincoln

Rosa Whalen of the University of Liverpool is the runner up.

The winning ideas

Aaron Parr & Jannat Hossain proposed friends, family and other students could be influenced by taking part in a challenge to go veggie for a month and raise sponsorship money.

"The aim of this idea is that once people see how easy it is to live as a vegetarian, they will drastically reduce their consumption of meat and fish after the month ends."

Natalia Collins & Luke Holmes proposed a cooking challenge targeting students loosely based on "Come Dine With Me".

"The discussion process encourages discussion of the food, and also it would be easier to discuss the issue of meat and food ethics in the environment this friendly competition would create."

Aaron Faunch wrote a newspaper article targeting the local community in Lincoln.

It "explores how our eating habits can help look after nature and keep us healthy at the same time."

The issues

Meat and dairy production causes up to 18% of climate-changing emissions. Plus too much meat is bad for our health.

It'd be much better if we ate sustainably.

This means:

  • Replacing some meat with more veg
  • Less processed food
  • Buying better quality (e.g. local, organic, fresh...)
