Help end targets for burning food crops in cars21 September 2012
Food prices are again rising to record highs. One of the things driving up prices is food being diverted into biofuel production - so you probably don't want to have biofuels in your car.
In the United States almost half of all maize is now being burned in cars. In Europe 60% of rapeseed is used for biodiesel.
But research has shown that biofuels made from crops don't help the climate. In fact they can result in an increase in climate emissions.
Prices are rising for basic foods. Biofuel plantations are diverting agricultural land away from food production and causing forests to be cut down.
This exacerbates the short-term impacts of bad harvests and pushes more people into poverty.
What can be done?
The most immediate action world leaders can take is to end biofuel policies that have no environmental benefits.
The world's 10 biggest intergovernmental organisations, including the United Nations and the World Bank, have already urged world leaders to do just that.
Please take action
On 16 October Environment Minister Owen Paterson will attend a global ministerial meeting on food prices. Please ask him to make sure that world leaders end targets for burning food crops in cars.
