Decision time on biofuels17 June 2011
The Government continues to increase the use of biofuels, ignoring evidence that they're harmful rather than helpful to the environment.
Harmful not helpful
Research shows that the rush for biofuels:
- Causes deforestation and biodiversity loss in producer countries.
- Threatens local people's livelihoods and their food supply.
- Increases greenhouse gas emissions instead of reducing them.
Despite the compelling evidence against biofuels, the Government is continuing the rush for biofuels in the UK.
Instead we need better public transport, greener cars and incentives to get people cycling and walking.
Did you know?
All fuel sold in the UK is already blended with 3.5% biofuel made from crops like palm oil, sugar cane and soy.
This is set to rise to 5% by 2013 and potentially to 10% by 2020. Meaning more devastation in producer countries.
You have no choice about what you buy and there's no information available on where your everyday fuel comes from.
More than 80% of biofuels sold in the UK are imported from overseas.
Early Day Motion 1916 urges the government to rethink its biofuel policy. Please ask your MP to sign this parliamentary petition to stop the increase in climate- damaging biofuels.
