Phone your MP today - the MOOvement speaks13 October 2010
Tens of thousands of you have asked your MP to support rainforest-free food. But with a crucial vote coming up in parliament, now is the time for us all to pick up the phone.
On 12 November MPs will be voting on a new law to break the hidden link between animal feed in factory farms and wildlife and rainforest destruction in South America. We need at least 100 to vote yes.
We're getting ever closer to our target - but we need your help to ensure enough MPs turn up and vote. A phone call from their constituents is guaranteed to get their attention.
It doesn't matter if you've sent them an email, a postcard or talked to them face-to-face. It doesn't even matter if they've already said they'll turn up for the vote or not.
The important thing is that lots of us pick up the phone.
What should I say?
Phoning your MP's office might sound daunting but it needn't be - MPs and their assistants are used to taking calls from the public.
Watch Ollie from our food team call his MP to see how it might work (suggested things to say below):
Call 020 7219 3000 today
Call the House of Commons switchboard on 020 7219 3000 and ask to be put through to your MP's office. If you don't know your MP click here.
If they're not there you could try calling their constituency office. You'll find the office phone number on your MP's own website.
Suggested things to say
- Explain that you're a constituent.
- State your concern about the deforestation and climate emissions caused by meat and dairy production and consumption.
- Explain that a new law is being proposed - the Sustainable Livestock Bill - that would require Government to help farmers operate more sustainably and end our reliance on animal feed from South America.
- Ask your MP if they will vote for the Bill at its second reading on Friday 12 November.
- Constituency duties on Fridays make it difficult to be in the House of Commons but on this occasion attending the vote is more important.
- Offer to send them our briefing about why we need the Bill.
Please let us know once you've made the call
