Ask the Government for planet-friendly canteens4 December 2009
New guidelines are being drawn up for public procurement of food - and we need you to help shape them.
They will help decide the kind of food that ends up on the plates of hospitals, schools and government canteens.
A healthier food standard
The Government spends over £2.2 billion of our money on food each year - so that's a lot of meals.
The new Healthier Food Mark scheme aims to make the meals healthier and more environmentally-friendly.
But there's a big gap in the first draft of the scheme.
What's missing?
The environmental impacts of meat and dairy production have been ignored - with no plans to switch to produce from planet-friendly farming.
We're not asking for veggie-only canteens.
But they haven't even considered the environmental and health benefits of switching to less and better produced meat and dairy.
It will also be voluntary - so public services will be free to opt-out. This has caused similar initiatives to fail in the past.
An easy to use but compulsory scheme would have a much bigger impact and could also help caterers cut costs.
How can we improve the plans?
The Department of Health is in charge of the scheme.
We need to ask them to:
- Beef up the targets to reduce the impact of meat and dairy on menus.
- Make the scheme compulsory.
