Stop supermarkets taking over our towns
15 August 2011

New planning rules could curb the devastation of our high streets and halt the march of the supermarket.

Not so super market

The Localism Bill currently going through Parliament and the draft  National Planning Policy Framework will change our high streets forever.

On the 25 July the Government published its new draft planning framework which we think will allow unsustainable development including unchecked supermarket growth.

We are campaigning to make sure that the draft will deliver sustainable development, but we also need to make sure that our MPs know that we don't want more supermarkets.

  • A new supermarket gets planning permission every working day.
  • 87% of successful planning applications are made by the 4 biggest supermarkets: Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury's and Morrisons.
  • 12,000 independent shops closed down in 2009.

This aggressive expansion comes at the expense of farmers, local shops, consumer choice and the environment.

Every little helps - write to your MP

Please ask your MP to ensure the Government has a strong policy  that supports town centres, diverse retail and controls out-of-town development.
