Supermarkets power is ever expanding. Better regulation could stop them getting so big that they can ride roughshod over the environment, local shops, farmers and communities. The Competition Commission's recent report recognised the problems associated with supermarket dominance; but still recommended the Government free up planning rules to allow for more supermarkets to be built out of town. We need to convince the Government not to follow the Competition Commission's recommendations to weaken planning rules and to bring in better recommendations to protect local people and the environment.
