Millions of people across Britain are tackling climate change - recycling, insulating their homes and using greener products. Businesses are cutting fuel bills by saving energy.

But we can do better.

Research for Friends of the Earth Europe suggests we can slash emissions by 40% by 2020 by

  • Wasting less energy
  • Quickly phasing out coal, oil and gas
  • Switching to clean, green, renewable energy
  • Using public transport more and making other changes in the way we live.

Here's what we should do in the UK

Warmer homes
Better insulation and more households and businesses making renewable energy.

Green energy boost
Encouraging small-scale renewable energy generation will create a £750+ million market and 5,800 jobs across the UK by 2020.

Cleaner transport
Schemes to inspire people to leave the car at home - like travel plans, better information about public transport and car sharing. And putting on more buses.

Government could step up measures to encourage a mass market in electric and hybrid cars.

Implement the Climate Change Act
Our success in getting the Government to introduce world-class legislation to limit greenhouse gases needs to be followed up with serious action.

Councils can do this at local level by setting local carbon budgets and putting plans in place to meet them. We're already making progress - help us do more.
