Why tackle climate change?

Benefits of action for UK
27 March 2012

The things we need to do to tackle climate change will also make life better in Britain.

In work

The UK could be a world leader in green energy. It's the windiest place in Europe - and great for wave and tidal energy.

Using clean local energy would make us less dependent on expensive dirty fuels - like imported oil and gas.

Not to mention the amount of jobs it'd create - 70,000 across England and Wales if councils insulated homes and fitted green energy like solar panels.

A push for electric and hybrid cars could create up to 10,000 new jobs and help preserve thousands more.

Affordable

Millions of us can't afford to heat our own homes over winter. So improving insulation and wasting less energy makes sense.

The council of Kirklees in Yorkshire has shown that insulation can save households around £150 a year on their on energy bills.

Healthier

No one wants to live in the cold especially when it affects your health. A cold, damp house is bad for older people, young children and those with chronic illness or disability.

Mobile

Public transport isn't just greener - most of us need it to get around. Two out of five jobseekers say lack of transport is a barrier to getting work.

And getting drivers to leave the car at home can cut air pollution - healthier for us all.

We're calling for the UK to cut its emissions by at least 40% by 2020. The Government has the power to make this happen.

> Help put pressure where it counts

Did you know?

The German renewable energy sector is worth £20bn and employs 250,000 people - compared to just 20,000 in the UK.
