Climate Bill passes Commitee Stage

The Climate Change Bill has moved one step closer to becoming law. It has now passed a major stage in the House of Commons.

Once law the Bill will commit the UK to legally binding reductions in carbon dioxide emissions.

About Committee Stage

During Committee Stage a small group of MPs discuss the Bill in detail. They look for ways to change or improve it.

Friends of the Earth is calling for a stronger Bill.  Amendments to support these demands were put forward for consideration.  They called for:

• Bigger cuts
  The latest science shows we need carbon dioxide emission reductions of at least 80% by 2050.
• Aviation and shipping
  All sources of emissions need to be counted under the law - including the UK's share of international aviation and shipping emissions.

Next steps

Although not incorporated into the Bill these amendments were supported by almost 90 MPs.

The Bill can now be debated by all MPs during the decisive Report Stage. This will now be in October or November.

If a similar number of MPs support a stronger Bill during this stage we will be in a great position.

Through The Big Ask thousands of people have been asking their MP to support a stronger climate change law.

We're almost there but we still have a long way to go.
