Tomorrow the Prime Minister will attend an EU Council meeting to agree the EU's position for the Copenhagen climate talks.

He plans to push the EU to commit to 30% emissions cuts by 2020 - but this still only gives us just a fifty-fifty chance of avoiding dangerous climate change.

We urgently need to tell Gordon to commit to 40%.

Dodgy dealings in Denmark

The back-room deals of rich nations were also exposed yesterday - putting developing counties at more risk than ever.

Gordon needs to help sort out this mess and call for proper financial support for developing counties and for unjust offsetting to be scrapped.

Dear Prime Minister,

As you prepare to go to this week's EU Council meeting I urge you to push for a 40% cut in emissions by 2020. I was pleased to hear that your plan to push for bigger cuts than the current EU position, but your proposal of 30% cuts would still only gives us a 50% chance of avoiding dangerous climate change. This is not good enough, especially for the developing countries on the front-line of climate change. You must push for at least 40% by 2020 and rule out the dodgy practice of offsetting. The UK and the rest of Europe has a legal and moral obligation to make cuts that reflect the current science on climate change. The leaked Danish text which was written without the involvement of developing nations most at risk shows we are not taking our historical responsibility for creating the majority of emissions in the first place seriously. I want to see you act to ensure the following are taken forward into the Copenhagen talks: - Emissions cuts of at least 40% by 2020 on 1990 levels for all developed countries under the Kyoto Protocol's second commitment period. - A new financial mechanism must be established under the authority of the UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change) to support developing countries in tackling climate change, with new public funding from developed countries. - Scrap offsetting including the expansion of the carbon market into forests. Offsetting is unjust and fundamentally flawed. Please assure me that you will be calling for these actions. I look forward to hearing from you.
