At the 2009 UN climate talks in Copenhagen, faint-hearted European leaders accepted a US-driven plan to weaken international ambition to stop climate change.

On the eve of the latest UN climate talks in Cancun, Mexico, the EU is returning with a dangerous and weak negotiating strategy.

Here's an example you can use (but personalising this message would be much more effective).

We need to see real progress at this year's UNFCCC meeting in Cancun, Mexico. Time is running out to bring down emissions and avoid a climate catastrophe. But Europe is going to the talks with a dangerously weak negotiating plan - representing little more than a business as usual scenario and falling short of the cuts of at least 40% in domestic emissions that are needed to avoid disastrous climate change. I urge you not to be intimidated by pressure to weaken existing international agreements to stop climate change. I ask that you unconditionally support the second commitment period of the Kyoto Protocol and commit the EU to a target of at least 40% emissions cuts by 2020 - without offsetting. Europe's plans to use the talks as an opportunity to push for an extension of global carbon markets will replicate the failure in Europe of the European Emissions Trading Scheme (EU-ETS). The EU-ETS is failing to deliver the scale of emissions reductions we need and shows little sign of improving. The emissions offsetting that the scheme permits allows companies to avoid cutting emissions in Europe and shifts the burden to developing countries. I look forward to your response.
