The Climate Change Bill is being debated by MPs in Parliament right now - and we need your help.

The Second Reading of the Bill took place on 9^th June. It will now go before a small committee of MPs who will decide how to amend it.

Only those on the Committee can make changes but all MPs can still show their support at this stage.

Key changes

Friends of the Earth believes a law to reduce carbon dioxide emissions is ground breaking but needs strengthening. Your MP can show their support for two important changes that call for:

Bigger cuts
Raise the target from 60% to 80% in line with the latest science.
International aviation and shipping emissions to be included
Currently excluded from the Bill making it unfair and less effective.

Firstly I'd like to thank you for signing EDM736 in support of strengthening the Climate Change Bill in the direction of an 80% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions and the inclusion of emissions from international aviation and shipping. It is extremely encouraging to see that you take this issue so seriously and that you are willing to put pressure on the Government to tighten up the Bill to make it truly ground-breaking and effective. 
 
Although there have been improvements made to the Bill in the Lords, the key flaws identified in the EDM have not been fully addressed.  As the Bill goes into the Committee Stage, we hope you will show your support again for appropriate amendments that have been tabled for the Public Bills Committee. These amendments are: 
 
          Amendment 2 - to raise the target from 60% to 80%
          Amendment NC1 - Emissions from international aviation or international shipping

I am writing to ask you to show your support for these amendments by adding your name to the substantial list of MPs who have already done so. 
 
I do understand that you may not be nominated to the Public Bills Committee on the Climate Change Bill and so may not be able to vote on these amendments. Nonetheless by signing to show your support for the amendments you will demonstrate the strength of feeling amongst MPs and add to the pressure for the Bill to be improved. 
 
These amendments deal with the very issues that the EDM identified and are a vital next step in ensuring that the Bill deals with carbon emissions from all sectors of the economy, and is in line with what the scientists say is required to tackle climate change.
