I once lived in a cold rented house and suffered from bad bouts of flu every year before vaccines were available. The house was miserably cold and draughty, even with the portable heaters we brought in. I also suffered with bad chillblains. As there was no heating at night, the toilet also sometimes froze.
I lived in this house throughout my school years and into my twenties. Although we managed to insulate round the windows and doors, the house was never warm and some rooms were always cold.
This state of affairs is no fun and can be bad for people's health, especially the young and the old.
