Fossil fuels are driving climate change and failing to provide for billions of people.

Governments across the world are keeping the world addicted to dirty fossil fuels.
Together, they're handing over almost a hundred billion dollars of tax payers' money every year to the oil, coal and gas industries.
This money should be spent helping billions of the world's poorest to access clean, safe and affordable energy, tackling both poverty and climate change.

Rio+20 can fix it

World governments will discuss fossil fuel subsidies and clean energy access at Rio+20. Nick Clegg will be there representing the UK.

Tens of thousands of Friends of the Earth supporters are pushing for clean British energy at home. Now we need Nick Clegg to push for clean global energy everywhere.

Dear Mr Clegg

I want you to fix our broken energy system: it is failing both people and planet. The International Energy Agency says our addiction to fossil fuels is leading to 6 degrees of global warming and a climate crisis. Meanwhile, 1.3 billion people don't have access to electricity and 2 in 5 still cook with polluting fuels. It's time to switch government subsidies away from dirty fossil fuel industries to support clean energy access for the billions without. At this summer's Rio+20 conference, you must push for: - an end to taxpayer subsidies to the fossil fuel industry, which almost a million people around the world are calling for - the money to be spent on helping people to gain access to clean, safe and affordable renewable energy - the UN Sustainable Energy for All (SE4All) initiative - which focuses on energy access - to be ambitious and inclusive, not locking us in to another generation of dirty fossil fuels - an end to the domination of big centralised power companies and provide more help for communities to own and control their own clean energy When you get back, please let me know what progress you've made to fix our broken energy system and tackle poverty and climate change.
