Ask your MP to support a strong Climate Change Bill

The Climate Change Bill is reaching its final stages - and we need your help.

Since the launch of The Big Ask in May 2005, over 200,000 of you have been in contact with your MP. The result? The Government has introduced a Climate Change Bill.

Before the Bill becomes law - MPs will have a chance to have their say. They can suggest amendments to improve the Bill.

A strong Climate Bill

We would like MPs to reaffirm their commitment to a strong Climate Bill.

One easy way for them to show their support is to sign a parliamentary petition - called Early Day Motion 736.

I am writing to ask you to add your name to a new Early Day Motion (EDM 736) that has been tabled by Nigel Griffiths MP on the Climate Change Bill. I agree with Mr Griffiths that the introduction of a legal framework for tackling climate change is a big step in the right direction. However, I remain really concerned that although the approach is the right one, the actual targets in the Bill at present mean it will not lead to the cuts in carbon emissions scientists say are needed. The Early Day Motion mentions a United Nations report saying much the same thing. In the last couple of days leading scientists, including current and former heads of the Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution, have signed a letter published in newspapers making it clear they agree too. Even the Prime Minister has said the evidence is now that we need larger cuts than the targets in the Bill. Yet despite this, the Bill as currently drafted still has targets that are too low, and a loophole that means emissions from international aviation and shipping will not be included. I therefore urge you to sign EDM 736 in order to add to the pressure for changes to be made to the Bill, so that the UK passes a Bill we can genuinely be proud of.
