Statement of support: Humber Gateway windfarm, offshore and onshore sections. I am writing to express support for the proposed offshore & onshore elements of the Humber Gateway Windfarm. I would like you to consider the following points when making your decision. As part of its strategy to tackle climate change and reduce CO2 emissions, the UK Government supports an EU target of 20% of all energy from renewable sources by 2020. This will require the participation of every community around the UK in adoption of low carbon energy technologies. Offshore windpower is the most important renewable energy technology for us to meet our target. The Humber Gateway windfarm is, therefore, a project of immense national importance. This is supported regionally by targets for the installation of offshore wind contained within the Regional Spatial Strategy. The Humber Gateway project will exceed the target for 2010 and will contribute nearly half of the 2021 target. The local impact of this project will be relatively small. I support cost-effective measures to minimise this impact but it must be balanced against the enormous threat of climate change, and the urgent need for action to cut greenhouse gas emissions in the UK. Climate change will have a devastating effect on the Yorkshire coastal region with large-scale coastal erosion and more extreme weather events resulting in floods of the scale of 2007. Finally, I would like to remind you that national planning policy now prioritises action on climate change in the new Planning Policy Statement: Planning and Climate Change. These guidelines strongly emphasise the guidance contained in PPS 1 paragraphs 13 and 22, and PPS 22, to promote and encourage the development of renewable energy resources. I urge you to approve the Humber Gateway proposal.
