Get serious about greener transport
17 June 2009

If your council takes action to tackle climate change it will:

  • Boost the local economy
  • Create jobs
  • Slash your fuel bills

Taking serious action now to cut carbon emissions is the way to avoid:

  • Worsening floods and droughts
  • Rising food prices
  • Economic instability across the UK.

Councils are key

Councils have a big say in how we heat and power our homes and how we get around.

Friends of the Earth is campaigning for councils to cut their carbon emissions by at least 40 per cent by 2020.

One way they can cut emissions is by reducing local traffic. But national Government needs to help them find more money to:

  • improve public transport
  • make it safer to walk and cycle.

Better funding needed

Transport and environment groups want the Department for Transport to create a Carbon Reduction Fund.

This would involve £5 billion of money already allocated to transport being moved into the Fund.

The Carbon Reduction Fund would be used by councils and other bodies to make a real impact on cutting emissions.

Real change

It would support projects that change how people travel - because technology alone won't cut transport emissions by enough.

We want the Fund to be included in the Carbon Reduction Strategy expected next month - so time is short.

Press for change

Ask the new Transport Secretary Lord Adonis for a Carbon Reduction Fund.
