Tell Ed Miliband to act for climate justice in Copenhagen

This climate change summit in Copenhagen sees world leaders making decisions that could affect the future of our planet.

Our Government must show its commitment to action that will help protect us from dangerous climate change.

Ed Miliband, Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, will be the key player from the UK.

We need to tell Mr Miliband to act to ensure the UK Government asks for the right agreement in Copenhagen.

Climate change is not simply an environmental challenge; it is fundamentally about poverty eradication, development, people's sovereignty and environmental and social justice.

What we want to see

Emissions cuts of at least 40% by 2020 on 1990 levels for all developed countries.

A new financial mechanism to support developing countries in tackling climate change.

Offsetting to be scrapped - including the the use of carbon trading in tackling deforestation. Offsetting is unjust and fundamentally flawed.

Dear Minister,

The decisions that are made by world leaders at this month's climate change summit in Copenhagen could affect the future of our planet. As Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change you have the opportunity to act at the summit, to ensure that we are all protected from the disastrous consequences of dangerous climate change. In particular I want to see you act to ensure the following are in the Copenhagen agreement: - Emissions cuts of at least 40% by 2020 on 1990 levels for all developed countries under the Kyoto Protocol's second commitment period. - A new financial mechanism must be established under the authority of the UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change) to support developing countries in tackling climate change, with new public funding from developed countries. - Scrap offsetting including the expansion of the carbon market into forests. Offsetting is unjust and fundamentally flawed. Please assure me that you will be calling for these actions on behalf of the Government. I look forward to hearing from you.
