On 25 January the Court of Appeal confirmed the High Court's previous ruling that last year's damaging announcement to cut the feed-in tariff 11 days before the consultation closed is illegal. They have also refused permission to appeal. You must now step in to ensure Government moves on from this and produces a plan to support a growing solar industry, rather than pursuing any further appeals. This will support green jobs, and help more people to reduce energy bills by tapping in to green energy. This ruling is essential to repair confidence in the scheme. It ensures future changes to the hugely successful feed-in tariff scheme must be made in a planned, legal way - in contrast to the damaging approach that brought a thriving green industry to a standstill last December. It is also welcome that Government last week brought in contingency action ahead of the ruling that means we know what the feed-in tariff will be from 3 March. This development and the legal ruling help businesses, householders and communities plan their renewable energy projects with renewed confidence. But Government plans still cast a long shadow over the solar industry. Current proposals - driven by the desire to keep within a Treasury-imposed budget that has all but run out - will see the solar industry reduced to as little as 10% of its current size according to the Government's own impact assessment. That means up to 29,000 people losing their jobs when, if handled properly, our green economy could be thriving. Please urgently step in to: * Accept the Appeal Court ruling - don't pursue another costly appeal. * Lift the Treasury cap - top up the budget using taxes already generated by solar jobs. * Support a growing solar industry and protect 30,000 solar jobs generated in the past 2 years. * Increase support for community and social housing projects. * Scrap plans to make only the most energy-efficient houses eligible for solar panels - meaning 9 out of 10 could miss out.
