Support concentrating solar power3 March 2009
Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) is a key technology for tapping in to the energy of the sun.
It uses mirrors to concentrate sunlight to create heat. This heat can be used to raise steam to drive turbines and generators.
The benefits of CSP include:
- Green energy
A plentiful supply of clean electricity. - Emission cuts
Reduces reliance on fossil fuels. - New jobs
As industry develops. - Fresh water in arid regions
The process can desalinate sea water.
Did you know?
CSP could produce the world's current electricity needs using less than 1% of the world's deserts.
Efficient and secure
It's economical to transmit solar electricity for 3,000km or more via a supergrid. Countries throughout Europe, the Middle East and North Africa could soon benefit from it.
Alongside other renewable energy sources this could reduce Europe's dependence on imported energy. It could also increase the variety of electricity sources.
Domestic potential
CSP plants are already up and running in several parts of the world. With help from the Government the UK could start receiving clean power from deserts very soon.
Press for change
Please ask your MP to sign a parliamentary petition calling for the Government to develop the potential of CSP.
