Offshore wind farm gets green light

The Scarweather Sands offshore wind farm near Swansea has been given the go ahead by the Welsh Assembly, a significant boost to supporters of renewable energy.

Friends of the Earth Cymru is delighted that the scheme - which will help the UK meet its renewable energy targets - has finally been approved.

A greener future?

Wind farms - along with other green energy sources like tidal, wave and solar power - could in future provide all the UK's electricity.

Switching to safe and secure renewable energy and using energy efficiently are the best ways to avert a global climate catastrophe caused by the burning of fossil fuels such as oil, coal and gas.

The Scarweather Sands wind farm will bring both energy and economic benefits to Swansea Bay.

Britain's first large scale offshore wind farm at North Hole off Rhyl is generating enough electricity to meet the annual needs of some 50,000 homes.
