Changing the rules

The Government's rules encourage economic activity that's bad for the planet and its people.

Green budget case

Greener budgets?

Climate change rules

The Government often takes big decisions that increase carbon emissions:

  • Air expansion plans
Will help to triple aviation's carbon emissions by 2050.
  • Ploughing billions into motorway widening
Rather than improving greener transport alternatives.
  • Campaigning for less green action

Lobbying to weaken EU rules on how much renewables should be produced.

Better decision-making rules

The Government's rules for making decisions need reforming to deliver quality economic activity, not just quantity.

The Government needs to:

  • Set a tough carbon budget
    - to limit the UK's contribution to climate change.

  • Put a higher price on carbon
    - to make sure the UK stays within this carbon budget.

  • Stop big carbon-increasing proposals
    - as they'll mean much more carbon dioxide will have to be cut elsewhere.

Friends of the Earth says:
  • Strong clear rules will help businesses deliver a low carbon economy.
