Green Economy

Our goals
17 May 2010

Friends of the Earth wants to see an economy that respects nature's limits.

To get this we need:

Shifts in investment

Too much money goes into polluting activities.

We need a huge shift in public and private investment:

  • Out of dirty fossil fuel power stations, airports and intensive agriculture
  • Into new, green technology, public transport and environmentally friendly farming

Clear rules for protecting the environment

We need tougher standards and laws to protect people's health and wild places.

Strong regulation of products and industry will also encourage new, clean technologies.

Changes to prices

Taking the greener option is often more expensive:

  • It can be cheaper to travel by car or plane instead of the bus or train
  • Businesses often find it costs too much to cut their pollution

We need reforms that put the environment at the heart of all decision making - meaning it will be cheaper and easier to take the green option.

And we need changes that make sure everyone - particularly poorer people - can afford the essentials in life, such as a home, heating, food and water.
