What next?16 March 2010
Friends of the Earth will continue to campaign for a green economy - and with your support we can make it happen.
How do we know this?
We have many years experience of campaigning at local, national and international levels - and we get results.
Here's what we are doing.
Councils must get serious about climate change
Our Get Serious About CO2 campaign is calling for every council to do its bit to tackle climate change.
If councils got serious about cutting emissions it would:
- boost the local economy
- create green jobs
- slash your fuel bills
Supermarkets - keeping the pressure on
A new supermarket watchdog aims to stop supermarkets bullying suppliers.
This is so farmers can be paid a fair price for what they produce.
Friends of the Earth is campaigning for the watchdog to have real teeth so that it can do its job properly.
Support for small farmers
Around £700 million of public money is spent every year propping up factory farming.
Such farms are causing deforestation overseas as land is cleared to grow soy for animal feeds.
This is leading to major greenhouse gas emissions.
As part of our Food Chain Campaign Friends of the Earth wants subsidies shifted away from intensive farming.
And more support for small-scale environmentally friendly farms.
Banking for a greener future
Friends of the Earth is campaigning to make sure the new Green Investment Bank has enough financial capital and a clear focus on:
- Renewable technologies
- Energy efficiency
Power plants and pollution
Friends of the Earth is campaigning for safeguards in the Government's plans for power stations - known as National Policy Statements.
This is to:
- Make sure our energy comes from cleaner, greener sources such as offshore wind farms
- To stop the UK building new heavily polluting power stations.
Tax and a green future
Friends of the Earth is campaigning for:
- Tax breaks to help businesses to go green
- Increased Government funding for local councils, schools and hospitals to invest in energy-efficiency
Carbon rules
Friends of the Earth is campaigning for tougher rules on the UK's contribution to climate change.
We're also campaigning for a global carbon budget to limit global emissions.
And we're pushing for climate change laws in 17 EU countries and Japan.
