Why we need a green economy16 March 2010
The world's economies are driven by huge quantities of natural resources.
These include timber, oil, metals, coal and gas.
This puts a massive strain on our environment.
It means communities and wild places are being devastated by industries like mining and oil.
And greenhouse gases are building in the atmosphere as:
- Forests are chopped down
- Fossil fuels are burned to power our homes and businesses
Economies are not working well for people. Despite immense wealth in some countries, billions around the world still live in poverty.
We need change - an economy that works for all people, without wrecking the environment we all depend on.
