Environmental Justice

What next?
24 March 2010

Friends of the Earth will continue to fight for environmental justice in the UK and around the world.

Here's what we are up to in the near future.

Local action to fight climate change

Our Get Serious About CO2 campaign is calling for local councils to do their bit to tackle climate change.

This includes improvements to public transport and helping people insulate their homes.

Both will help to improve the lives of disadvantaged people.

Did you know?

More than 4 million UK households live in fuel poverty.

This means they spend more than a tenth of their income on fuel for heating.

Working for climate justice

Our International Climate campaign will continue to push for climate justice around the world.

Action on planning

National Policy Statements (NPS) are crucial to big planning decisions in the UK.

They affect the go-ahead for new nuclear and coal power stations.

But they do not give people enough chance to influence decisions about where they live.

Friends of the Earth is raising this concern among MPs - and demanding that Parliament properly examine National Policy Statements.

We also want the new NPS on energy to:

  • Promote sustainable development across the UK
  • Tackle climate change
  • Prioritise renewable energy

We continue to advise and support communities that want to challenge bad environmental decisions.

Fixing the food chain

Friends of the Earth is working in Latin America to halt the expansion of industrial-scale soy farming.

Soy causes huge damage to the environment because forests and grasslands are cleared to grow it.

And it has massive social costs.

Sometimes farmers are forced off their land to make way for soy.

And large-scale crop spraying is damaging health.

Our Food Chain Campaign will continue to highlight the effects of soy on people in Latin America.

In Paraguay, for example, we are helping locals:

  • highlight the problems with soy
  • promote the need for sustainable alternatives to soy
  • push for laws that protect their villages and way of life
