Environmental Justice

Why environmental justice matters
24 March 2010

Friends of the Earth believes that tackling environmental injustice will help protect the natural world - and bring about a fairer society.

This is because the health of people and planet go hand in hand.

But inequality and unfair laws prevent this happening.

Inequality

It's the people with the least power and money:

  • Who are worst hit when the environment is damaged
  • Cause the least destruction to the natural world
  • Do not get a fair share of the Earth's resources
  • Who are not listened to by governments and corporations

This is what we mean by environmental injustice.

Broken rules

It is hard for people to use the law to protect the environment. It's expensive for an individual to take a polluting company to court, for example.

In the UK, some planning laws mean it's difficult for individuals to have a say in decisions affecting where they live.
