National Policy Statements14 January 2010
National Policy Statements (NPS) are crucial to decisions on the construction of big infrastructure such as new nuclear and coal power stations.
The Government has announced a consultation and parliamentary scrutiny process to look at these NPS but it is very short and inadequate.
For example, in Hartlepool - where a new nuclear power station is planned, only a few days notice was given of the consultation open days on the new Nuclear NPS.
We believe that much more time should be spent on ensuring that the policy is properly looked at, with a real opportunity for people to influence the decisions made.
Friends of the Earth wants to ensure the NPS on energy:
- Creates a national framework for sustainable development
- Tackles climate change
- Prioritises renewable energy from renewable resources such as tidal and wind
