Make planning work for climate change

Planning policy is a vital tool in delivering the UK Climate Change Act and ensuring that we meet our EU commitment for renewable energy.

We want the Government to safeguard new guidance for local authorities to make tackling climate change a top priority in planning decisions.

Planning for a Low Carbon Future

The new guidance would make sure local authorities take the right steps to meet UK targets in cutting carbon dioxide emissions.

This will ensure that renewable energy projects get the permission they need to go ahead.

The problem

The Government wants to scrap the new guidance. They see it as just another layer of information local authorities don't need.

Dear Minister,

Planning is a vital tool in delivering the Government's commitments in the UK Climate Change Act and EU renewable energy target. I am concerned that the guidance for local authorities on tackling climate change and delivering renewable energy projects (PPS, Planning for a Low Carbon Future), drawn up following consultation earlier this year, will not be issued in its current form. This planning guidance is needed alongside new legislation in this session of Parliament for local carbon budgets to drive ambitious emissions cuts by helping local authorities to lead effective carbon reduction strategies across their local areas. I urge you to incorporate the Planning for a Low Carbon Future guidance into the new National Planning Framework. I look forward to hearing from you about how these concerns will be addressed.
