Take action to secure a better energy future6 July 2011
We want the Government to amend the new Energy National Policy Statements (NPSs) to tackle climate change and promote renewable energy.
We urgently need you to write to your MP and ask them join the debate and support our amendments to the NPSs.
Friends of the Earth is calling for:
- the inclusion of climate change targets for 2030 (as set out by the Committee on Climate Change)
- policy that will prevent a new dash for gas
- an appropriate mix and quantity of energy infrastructure, not "all types"
- incineration to be removed from the Renewables NPS.
Read our briefing for more information.
Failing to tackle climate change
The Energy NPSs fail to address climate change and do not outline how the UK will reach its 2050 emission reduction targets.
The policy must include the Committee on Climate Change's recommended targets for 2030 - a critical mid-point.
Getting the right mix
The Energy NPSs state that there is an urgent need for all types of electricity generation.
This will pave the way for more gas-fired power stations and squeeze out renewable energy - threatening our ability to tackle climate change.
The burning problem
Incinerators are extremely carbon intensive - emitting around a third more greenhouse gases than a modern day gas-fired power station.
They also create a demand for waste that is at odds with efforts to increase recycling rates.
Please write to your MP and ask them to support our amendments at the Commons debate on 18 July 2011.
