Government support condemned

Prior to the World Trade Organisation (WTO)'s meeting in Cancun, Mexico in September, the International Development Select Committee published a report on 14 July arguing that an agreement on investment:

  • would not help development
  • should not be negotiated in the WTO

Friends of the Earth believes an investment agreement (PDF† 303K) would mainly benefit transnational companies by giving them even more rights and is actively opposing it.

The aim of the committee's report was to influence the UK Government's input into the EU's positions, before and at Cancun, to ensure the current round of WTO negotiations does lead to genuine development.

The International Development Select Committee is appointed by the House of Commons to "examine the expenditure, administration and policy of the Department for International Development".
