Research by the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research and published by Friends of the Earth shows that UK CO2 reduction targets will be almost impossible to meet if aviation expands in line with the Government's Aviation Paper. Their broader report, Decarbonising the UK (2005), makes it clear that if the expansion occurs and the target to reduce CO2 emissions is to be met, all other sectors of the economy will not be allowed to emit any CO2. Yet, despite this, the East of England faces continued threats from Airport expansion at Stansted Airport, where a second runway is proposed by 2011/12, the extension of the existing runway at Luton, and increased use of other airports in the region including Norwich and Southend. By ignoring the growing local to global environment damage caused by aviation, the Government has followed the old 'predict and provide' model for air travel once used for planning road space and now widely accepted as flawed and a poor way to plan. The Stop Stansted Expansion campaign is also working to contain the development of Stansted Airport within tight limits and, in this way, to protect the quality of live of residents over wide areas of Essex, Hertfordshire and Suffolk.
