Euro MPs fail GM Test

Friends of the Earth slammed MEPs after they failed to vote through measures to protect the environment from GM pollution. The MEPs voted against taking any measures to stop GM pollution, ban foods that contain antibiotic resistant genes or make biotech companies liable for any damage caused by GM crops.

"Euro MPs have failed to give our environment the tough protection it needs from the threat of GM pollution. Whilst this law may be better than the last one, the European Parliament has failed to tackle the key issue. The biotech industry has been given permission to pollute our countryside, contaminate our food and gamble with our health without making them liable for the damage if things do go wrong. The people of Europe deserve better from their elected representatives," said Friends of the Earth's Campaigns Director Liana Stupples.
