GM contamination inevitable admits Meacher

Environment Minister Michael Meacher admitted today that GM contamination was inevitable at any distance. The Minister was responding to an oral question from Owen Paterson MP on the importance of protecting organic farming from GM crops with adequate separation distances.

"Friends of the Earth has long argued that GM pollen spreads further than the biotech industry will admit. At last a Government Minister agrees with us!” said Friends of the Earth Real Food Campaigner Pete Riley. “What we need now is action to prevent the current farmscale trails and test sites contaminating crops and honey. Meacher has let a cat out of the bag: a rambling debate about crop separation distances would be a complete waste of time."
