FOE responds to Prince Philip's confidence about GM foods

A row about GM foods appears to be dividing the royal family. The latest salvo has been fired by the Duke of Edinburgh in the Times who dismisses concerns about GM.

Commenting Friends of the Earth Director Charles Secrett said: “The Duke hit the nail on the head when he talked about the effect the grey squirrel has had on the countryside. Who would have predicted the damage it would do? If we had stopped to test the effects of this particular genetic import, we would never have allowed it to establish itself. The fact remains that GM crops raise concern about possible damage to the environment and to human health. It is therefore essential that we proceed with caution. If we continue to charge down the road to commercial development of GM crops before any proper testing has been completed, the Duke and all the rest of us may live to regret it.”
