TV chef calls for a tighter curb of supermarket power

Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall has lambasted the supermarkets for their corrosive effect on the UK's food culture.

He was speaking at Friends of the Earth's Supersized Supermarkets public forum - jointly hosted with:

The sell-out crowd heard a broad range of speakers talk about the destructive power of the supermarkets.

The lower the prices your supermarkets pay their suppliers, the worse it is for us.

Writer and campaigner Stacey Mitchell spoke of the impact of WalMart in the US. And broadcaster Rosie Boycott led a debate exploring the supermarkets' impact on local shops, farmers, and the environment.

Director of Friends of the Earth, Tony Juniper wrapped up the event - warning that the supermarkets are abusing their massive power. The applause that followed showed that the public agreed.
