Governments from around the world will soon be discussing who should pay if GMOs damage biodiversity. These Biosafety Protocol negotiations will take place in Bonn, Germany, in May.
The EU currently supports non-binding rules in national government laws. But a legally binding international regime is needed to ensure that the polluter pays for any damage caused by GMOs.
That is the only way to ensure that GM companies will be held to account if and when things go wrong.
This is especially vital for developing countries - many of them do not yet have national laws in place to protect their communities and environments from GM crops and foods.
The UK is an influential player within Europe so we want our Government to take a stand on this issue.
Please write to the Government to demand that the UK pushes for an EU position that supports a legally binding liability regime that holds GM companies to account.
