Ask your MP to say no to more monster supermarkets

The Competition Commission has backed down over its worst supermarket planning recommendations – but we still need to act to protect our high streets.

Unexpected decision

They had previously recommended removing key planning rules in order to make more land available for supermarkets on the edge of town centres and out of town.

The unexpected decision to drop these recommendations follows months of lobbying by Friends of the Earth and our supporters.

Closed high street shops
Two supermarkets a week have opened since 2001
- but local shops continue to close at an alarming rate

Threats and opportunities

The Government will be consulting on new planning guidance very soon – so there is still a threat to our high street. We had expected them to do this earlier but it has been delayed.

In the meantime we can still let Government know that we want a set of strong and positive planning policies to be put in place.

Ask your MP to write to the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, Hazel Blears MP

Please email your MP asking them to raise your concerns with Hazel Blears MP.

It's a three step process:

  1. Find your local MP
  2. Choose a contact method
  3. Send a letter by email, fax or print out to post*

Step 1 of 3: Find your local MP   Action
