Harrogate Gets Serious about CO2
1 October 2009

Harrogate Borough Council has commited to cut its carbon dioxide emissions by 40% by 2020.

Friends of the Earth lobbied for this as part of its Get Serious About CO2 campaign.

This is a huge victory for Harrogate Friends of the Earth.

The scale of cuts reflects the urgent need to reduce carbon emissions across homes, energy and transport.

And it is in line with what climate change science says is necessary.

After a summer of lobbying by Harrogate Friends of the Earth, the council has published its Climate Change Strategy.

This strategy commits to a 40% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions by 2020.

Harrogate Borough Council is the first local authority to commit to this scale of carbon cuts in response to Friends of the Earth's Get Serious About CO2 campaign.

We are delighted that Harrogate Borough Council has made this fantastic but essential commitment to reduce emissions.

We hope that councils up and down the country will soon follow Harrogate's lead.

Harrogate Friends of the Earth coordinator
