Merthyr defeats proposed mega incinerator
24 October 2011

American company Covanta has announced it has pulled out of plans to set up a mega incinerator in Merthyr Tydfil, Wales.

This is amazing news for local people who have been campaigning with Friends of the Earth against the monster incinerator since January last year.

Covanta claimed the project would benefit local residents by creating 80 jobs. Only a fraction would have been given to locals.

Local residents established the United Valleys Action Group (UVAG) to:

  • Raise awareness.
  • Stop the incinerator that would bring 750,000 tonnes of rubbish a year to an area of high unemployment.

Thanks to their campaigning, more than 10,000 objections were submitted to the Infrastructure Planning Commission (IPC).

The incinerator has been successfully scrapped.
