Good call: More phone companies come clean
31 July 2013

Fantastic news - five more top mobile phone companies have come clean and admitted they use Bangka tin in their products.

We asked other top mobile phone manufacturers the same question you asked Apple - do they use tin that's destroying forests, coral reefs and livelihoods in Indonesia?

Over 25,000 Friends of the Earth supporters have emailed Apple about the tin in their products. No wonder Blackberry, Sony, Nokia and Motorola and LG were keen to provide us with statements.

All five companies have admitted to using Bangka tin and have committed to finding an industry-wide solution.

It's fantastic that Blackberry, LG, Motorola, Nokia and Sony have joined Samsung and Philips in leading the way towards a fairer future on Bangka. These brands should be congratulated for facing up to and addressing the problems in their supply chains.

Yet Apple still won't admit to using tin from Bangka Island.

I'm delighted that the makers of mobile phones have started to be open and honest about the presence of Bangka tin in their supply chains... [Apple] must also admit the obvious. Bangka tin is likely to be in their products, and they have a responsibility to help reduce the environmental and social damage that tin mining is causing in the region.

The story of Bangka tin also highlights why we need a strong new European law ensuring companies reveal their human and environmental impacts.
