A step closer to putting climate change at the heart of the planning system

Guidance for Local Authorities

To encourage Local Authorities to plan for future climate change challenges, the Planning and Climate Change Coalition has published a guide.

It shows Local Authorities how to plan to mitigate for and adapt to climate change.

The coalition was set up to put climate change at the heart of the planning system. It's led by Friends of the Earth and the Town and Country Planning Association (TCPA).

Huge success

In a recent speech in the House of Lords during the examination of the Growth and Infrastructure Bill, Baroness Hanham referenced the Planning and Climate Change guide.

This is a huge success.

The Baroness also highlighted the Government's expectation that planning should help meet the objectives of the Climate Change Act 2008.

Planning has an important role in tackling climate change and making the transition to a low carbon economy.

Meeting the climate change challenge

We're pleased that the Baroness recognises the important role that planning has in helping local communities meet the climate change challenge.

It's vitally important that local authorities ensure that their plans are developed with communities and tackle climate change head-on.
