Top retailers go peat-free5 September 2001
DIY stores are turning away from peat after all your constant battling against Miracle-Gro compost.
In April 2001 B&Q sent shockwaves through the industry by announcing plans to go completely peat-free!
Persistent campaigning from Earthmatters readers and Friends of the Earth supporters has led to Homebase and Focus DIY declaring that they also intend to stop stocking peat containing compost.
Thanks is also due to all of you who logged onto to Friends of the Earth's spoof website this summer (at www.miracle-gone.co.uk) and sent protest letters and emails direct to the Chief Executives of the companies, like Homebase, Wyevale Country Gardens and Focus DIY, that have been stocking The Scotts Company's Miracle-Gro compost.
In letters to Friends of the Earth supporters Homebase has stated that "...peat does not have a long-term future within our business" and that they will soon be making "...a full announcement concerning our future policy"
The Focus DIY chain has similarly stated that "Hopefully, in due course, we will be able to phase out peat altogether".
