Buzzing bee breakfast in Sheffield
20 July 2012

A hive of activity in Sheffield on Friday 13 July, as the Sheffield local group organised a "bee breakfast".

The group invited local MPs, Councillors and the press to come and see just how important bees are, and what our diet would look like without them.

Why do we need to create such a buzz about bees?

Bees pollinate over 75% of our food crops and Friends of the Earth are calling on David Cameron to create a national bee action plan.

Making the Bee Breakfast happen

When the group decided to hold a Bee Breakfast back in May, they contacted the council for permission to hold a stall. The breakfast was held at the Peace Gardens in the city centre since it was easy to find and also an ideal spot with greenery and flowers.

On the day of the breakfast the group bought strawberries, apples, pears, blueberries, grapes and oats to display on their stall - most of which are pollinated by bees. They asked people who attended which foods they'd like to have for their breakfast.

Results

Despite the wet weather, Meg Munn MP and Cllr Isobel Bowler came along to talk to the group about what they can do to protect bees. Later on, BBC Radio Sheffield's Paulette Edwards came along to do an interview for her show about the bees decline and how important they are for us.

Both Meg Munn and Isobel Bowler were very concerned and understood why we need to protect bees, and agreed to work with the group to find a solution to the problem of bee decline.
