Now Stockport votes to Get Serious About CO21 February 2011
Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council has signed up to the Get Serious target of reducing CO2 emissions across the Borough by 40% by 2020.
This follows a successful campaign by Stockport local Friends of the Earth group dating back to 2009.
During the campaign, the group:
- presented hundreds of campaign postcards to the council signed by local people
- wrote letters to local newspapers
- met with councillors
- gave a presentation to the Stockport Environment Partnership
The group also organised a packed public meeting with the Communities and Local Government Minister Andrew Stunell to stress the need for more local action to cut carbon emissions.
Kate Eldridge, Stockport Friends of the Earth campaigner and local resident said:
"It is fantastic that the Council has listened to the hundreds of people from Stockport who called for a serious target to cut emissions as part of Friends of the Earth's Get Serious About CO2 campaign.
However, the urgency of climate change is such that we can't rely on all councils to take the lead and voluntarily adopt a target as Stockport has.
That's why Friends of the Earth is calling for a nationwide system of local carbon budgets to help all councils get behind cost-effective green measures like insulating homes and improving public transport - creating jobs, slashing fuel bills and reducing CO2 at the same time."
