Supermarket bullies forced to back down 16 March 2010
A new watchdog will rein in supermarket bullies, the Government has announced.
The 2010 Grocery Supply Code of Practice will help stop supermarkets pushing suppliers to reduce costs.
It is the result of years of campaigning by Friends of the Earth and its supporters.
Buying power
Supermarkets sell more than three quarters of our food and have massive buying power.
When they demand cheaper products, farmers have to squeeze more from the land.
The result is more intensive farming with increased use of pesticides.
And ultimately the environment suffers.
Friends of the Earth will continue campaigning to make sure the watchdog is able to keep supermarkets in check.
